2016 SCY Championships

The 2016 Pacific Masters Short Course Yards Championships were held on April 8, 9, and 10 at Campolindo High School’s Soda Aquatic Center in Moraga. This year’s wet and chilly conditions made staying warm a top priority for the 674 swimmers of all ages who attended, but in no way dampened their competitive spirit. In fact, the championships recorded a 15.2% increase in participating swimmers over last year despite the weather, and they swam an average of 4.7 events compared to 4.2 events in 2015. Cold? Just keep swimming! Team and individual meet results are available here.

chillyThe meet was hosted by Pacific Masters Swimming, which enlisted the help of several community non-profit groups for timing on Saturday and Sunday. This proved to be a valuable experience for these groups (Pittsburg High School Robotics Club, Vallejo Aquatics, Richmond Swims Sailfish Club, Full Stride Track Club, and Undercurrents Swim Team), prompting one club to comment that “[the meet] was a great opportunity for the kids to think about the aging process, long term health, exercise and fitness.” Pacific Masters Swimming thanks all of its timers for their help in keeping the meet running smoothly.

At Saturday’s awards ceremony, Mike Kazek of Cal Maritime Academy Masters (CMAM) received the Pacific Masters Swimming 2016 Coach of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions to Masters swimming. For more on Coach Kazek, see Mike Kazek wins Pacific Masters Coach of the Year Award.

Ann HirschAwards for Age Group Swimmers of the Year for the 2015 swimming season were presented; this award is based on the number of points earned for 1st through 3rd place in the Pacific Top Ten, 1st through 10th in the USMS Top Ten, Pacific records, USMS records, and 1st through 3rd places in Pacific Open water competitions. The points were tabulated from all three swim courses (SCY, SCM, LCM). Here’s a link to a complete list of age group winners.

The ceremony also honored Laura Val for her legendary achievements by renaming its Swimmer of the Year award as the Laura B. Val Award for Outstanding Male (or Female) Swimmer of the Year. The 2016 recipients of the Laura B. Val Award were Richard Burns and Laura Val.

Photos, photos, photos! It wouldn’t be a PacMasters Championship without photos to help swimmers remember what it was like to be there, racing and cheering on their teammates. A photo gallery of the 2016 SCY Championships can be viewed here.
